Allan Osberg’s dedication to both his work and community is truly unparalleled. He was raised in the Seattle area and attended Lincoln High School. His father Axel Osberg formed the Osberg Construction Company in the 1920’s and turned his attention towards public works projects. Allan graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1945, and then proceeded to Harvard University to receive a Master’s Degree in the same field, specializing in Soil Mechanics. Two years later, he joined the family company.

Allan’s first exposure to the AGC occurred in the 1950’s when his father was the president of the Mountain-Pacific Chapter in 1955. He, in turn, became president in 1965. In 1974, following the merger of the Seattle-Northwest and Mountain-Pacific Chapters, Osberg served as the first president of what became the AGC of Washington.

Osberg’s construction career includes major projects such as overseeing the reconstruction of portions of the North Cascade Highway, straightening the Sammamish River and constructing the Yukon River Bridge for the Alyeska pipeline in Alaska. A committed entrepreneur and innovator in his field, Allan developed unique solutions to heavy construction design challenges as well as remarkably well engineered physical structures, ranging from marinas to fish hatcheries, high-end condominiums and housing projects.

Allan became involved with the national AGC Education Committee demonstrating his commitment to education within the construction industry. He joined the AGC Education Foundation in 1990 and served as president in 1994. He has served on multiple committees, volunteering for years as an interviewer and mentor for scholarship candidates.

Allan’s honors include receiving the Mountain-Pacific Chapter’s Contractor of the Year in 1970, induction into the University of Washington Construction Hall of Fame in 1998, and the 2007 AGC Lifetime Achievement Award.

Allan and his wife, Inger have been married for fifty-six years. They have raised 2 children, Kimberley Osberg Lippman, and Tom Osberg and very much enjoy the company of their grandchild, Sophia Lippman. The Osbergs enjoy world travel including multiple explorations of the Antarctic, river and ocean cruises throughout the world, and historic train journeys on multiple continents. They equally enjoy their annual fall journey through the Pacific Northwest or visiting ghost towns throughout the Western frontier.

The Osbergs remain dedicated to giving back to their community. The Mr. and Mrs. Allan F. Osberg Scholarship was established in 1994 to ensure that future generations will receive quality construction education. In 2000, they also provided a major gift in support of the Foundation’s Technology Lab. In April of 2007, Allan and Inger Osberg became Laureates in support of the College of Engineering at the University of Washington, where they support both a department Chair and a scholarship for an outstanding engineering student on an ongoing basis. Allan has also been deeply involved in board leadership at the Nordic Heritage Museum, celebrating his own Swedish heritage and Inger’s Norwegian roots. He has also been active in environmental, educational and artistic organizations across the Northwest.

Mr. Osberg is an exemplary leader; he models generosity, integrity, hard work, innovation and service to the future generation of construction professionals.

Don was an exceptional man who led an exceptional life.  In 1952, he married Clarice Best of West Seattle.  Together they raised their six children in Medina, Washington.  After a heroic two year battle with pancreatic cancer, Don passed away at home on March 29, 2008 with his family by his side.

Don was born and raised in Aberdeen, Washington, graduating from Aberdeen's Weatherwax High School where he played the trombone in the marching band.  He served in the Army during World War II and graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Washington, where he was a Phi Kappa Sigma.  After graduation, he joined his father Paul and brother Robert forming Bocek and Sons, later named Bocek Brothers Construction Company.

His construction career was also exceptional.  Bocek Brothers built many miles of roads, highways, bridges and other public works projects.  They later developed countless single family lots and a multitude of other real estate projects.  In the early sixties, Bocek Brothers helped build I-5 through downtown Seattle relocating Don and his family to Bellevue from the Grays Harbor area.

Throughout his life he was very active with the Associated General Contractors (AGC), serving as the Seattle Chapter President in 1984.  He helped create and lead the AGC Education Foundation and awarded many scholarships.  He was very dedicated to his work and the AGC.  He instilled his dedicated work ethic in his children and those with whom he worked.

Don was honored and recognized by his peers in 2002 as an inductee into the University of Washington Hall of Fame and by the AGC in 2007, honoring him with a Lifetime Achievement Award.  Don supported his fraternity Phi Kappa Sigma throughout his adult life, serving as an officer for the Alumni Board.

He traveled the world and the U.S. extensively with his wife and good friends Allan and Inger Osberg.  He loved his Husky football team; he was a season ticket holder for over 55 years and rarely missed a home game or a Rose Bowl.  He loved his grandchildren, seldom missing a performance or a game.  His Sunday morning pancake breakfasts were legendary and will be especially missed.

He is survived by Clarice, his wife of 57 years, six children Jeanne Van Tighem (Jim), Diane Adam (Miles), Julie Coleman (Dan), David Bocek (Denise), Mary Comstock (Mark), Molly Goudy (Blaise), 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.  Don was preceded in death by his father and mother, Paul and Stefania, his brother Robert and sister Elizabeth.

He will forever leave a void in the lives of his family and all those he touched.  His exceptional spirit will always be with us.
